Barack Obama Gets a Little Bit of Love from Al Gore

With the race for the White House down to Barack Obama and John McCain, 2000 Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore is scheduled to appear for the first time on the campaign trail tonight to lend his support and endorsement to the Illinois senator. Michigan has become an important state for the Obama campaign. John Edwards also unveiled his endorsement of the presumptive Democratic nominee in Michigan.

Senator Debbie Stabenow's Husband Caught in Prostitution Sting

The husband of U.S. Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow has become the latest figure in the political arena to be caught up in a prostitution scandal. Thomas Athans, co-founder of TalkUSA Radio, was busted during a police stakeout operation at a hotel in Michigan. Athans admitted to paying $150 for oral sex from 20-year-old prostitute Alycia Martin.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Pleads Not Guilty to Felony Charges

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and former aide Christine Beatty have pleaded not guilty to charges they commited perjury about a romantic relationship between them during a court case last year. Kilpatrick and Beatty, who have been on released bail, are facing 12 felony charges related to the alleged lying under oath.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and former aide Christine Beatty are facing felony after text messages were revealed that contradicted sworn testimony the two gave in a court case last year. Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday that Kilpatrick and Beatty will be arraigned on 12 felony charges, including perjury and obstruction of justice.

Michigan Judges Strike Down Health Benefits for Same-Sex Partners

Same-sex partners of Michigan public employees are not eligible for health insurance, the State Court of Appeals ruled Friday. According to the Associated Press, a three-judge panel said a 2004 voter-approved ban on gay marriage also applies to same-sex domestic partner benefits. The decision reverses a 2005 ruling which said universities and governments could provide the benefits.

Michigan Judge's Nomination to Federal Bench Halted Over Gay Marriage Ceremony

The nomination of Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Janet Neff to the federal bench is on hold because she helped lead a commitment ceremony for a lesbian couple four years ago. Sen. Sam Brownback, of Kansas, an opponent of gay marriage who has presidential aspirations, said Friday he wants to know whether there was anything illegal or improper about the ceremony in Massachusetts.
